Night works returning on one of Shire's main access routes

The Kuranda Range Road is set to be closed on weeknights from the middle of next month as work to fix the key arterial road following Cyclone Jasper damage in 2023/24 ramps up again.
The closures will go from 9pm to 4am on Sunday to Thursday nights from Sunday, February 15, until the end of March, weather permitting.
Traffic will be let through once in each direction at midnight every closure night.
“This is to enable construction activities to be completed that are not possible using single-lane closures or long traffic holds,” the State Government Traffic and Main Roads Department (TMR) states.
There are four main worksites along the road that leads up the hill from Smithfield to Kuranda - one of only two access routes into Douglas Shire from the south - and further along the Kennedy Highway.
At Henry Ross Lookout the road is under 24/7 single-lane traffic control as works take place on the downslope.
Further up the winding road about 1km above the hairpin bend area the slope is being stabilised, with spasmodic single-lane traffic control in place.
Between Saddle Mountain Road and Streets Creek, stabilisation works are underway at two upslope sites, with a single-lane section moving between sites.
And on the Kennedy Highway near Tichum Creek, stabilisation works are restarting by the end of January at two spots between the Spena Road turnoff and Tichum Creek, with single-lane traffic control in place during the day when needed.
