A dramatic rescue at Laura River was captured by Niki Ruker.

Newsport has kicked 2026 off with a bang, sharing contributor stories and images including crazy flooded creek crossing attempts, crocs on the move, located locomotives, drowned cars and sunken boats.

While the hard working team of journalists and photographers at Newsport cover as much of the news of the Douglas Shire and surrounds as possible, there’s always plenty going on around the traps that we won’t see, or cannot get to, when it happens.

With a news patch extending all the way to the Tip of Australia, making it one of the biggest - and most inhospitable - anywhere in the world, there’s plenty to cover.

At Newsport, we love your help to bring us the news and happenings from the most diverse and spectacular setting anywhere to be found.

We have the world watching us thanks to the now 15 years established Newsport website and email alerts, for free and readily accessed with the Newsport App.

But it doesn’t have to be the spectacular or bizarre to make our news feed and your fortnightly FREE glossy news print edition.

If you have a story to share, a point to make with a letter, we welcome your contributions and engagement.

Send your items to [email protected] and let us know what’s making news for you and your group, community and the wider region.
