Mossman underwater hockey players Jackson Francis and Lani Kelliher have won gold with the under-15 state team at the Australian Underwater Hockey National Titles on the Gold Coast.

The team won the tournament ahead of WA, with Victoria coming in third.

Queensland went through the tournament undefeated, scoring more than 100 goals and letting in none.

Cricket Far North

The two Muddies cricket teams lost on the weekend to Mareeba and Atherton respectively.

The Thirds travelled to Mareeba, but a late withdrawal due to illness meant they took to the field with 10 players.

The Mareeba openers got off to a good start, with captain Remo Esposito (46) hitting the ball cleanly to the boundary.

The fielding team stuck to their task, however, and limited the damage in the end to all out for 182 in the 32nd over.

Best of the bowlers was Tim Dellatore, with 3/25, while Cam Williams took 3/33.

The Muddies batsmen, however, struggled, finishing on 78.

This week the Thirds take on Mulgrave in Cairns.

The Fourths batted first at home against Atherton on Sunday.

They started well enough, at one stage on 2/30, but then fell away badly, finishing with just 53 including six ducks.

Atherton chased the total down with the loss of just two wickets, finishing on 2/55.

This week the Fourths are up against the Cyclones in Cairns on Sunday.

Come and try sport

A host of dry-season sports are holding sign-on sessions and come-and-try days for both junior and senior players at the moment, including Douglas Heat basketball, Sharks rugby league, the Port Douglas netball competition, the Port Douglas Life Saving Club nippers’ program and the Crocs AFL teams.

And don't forget Reef Raiders rugby union and Douglas Dragons soccer teams.

Check out the clubs' social media pages for further details.
