Music soothes the soul.... hopefully!
Jungle Juice
I’m not sure what it is, but I’ve been thinking when on the weekly run down the range to the big smoke - well they think they’re a big deal down that way at least - that I need to make a new mixed tape for the drive.
It’s great to have some tunes as you take in the sights on our prized scenic drive.
And for some reason, the one I have is a bit worn out. Even though I’ve only ever played it on that particular drive since old mate Jasper blew through town.
I’ve had to do the old biro wind back repair a couple of times thanks to the not so trusty tape deck in the ol’ Datsun 120Y being on the blink. Had someone told me the Shitbox Rally was in town over the weekend, I could have traded the Datto and its troublesome tape deck and I could now be burning a CD for my Captain Cook adventures.
Still, I’d have the task of choosing the play list. And that’s where you can help me with your suggestions of suitable tracks.
A proud Aussie I am, Down Under is a monty for the Cook Drive CD, but just as much for the Men at Work responsible for it.
Barnsey’s Driving Wheels, the Pretenders Back On The Chain Gang and Drive by The Cars are a given. And even though it matters not the performance of the vehicle you’re in (Datto included), Fast Car has to be an add in.
Take It Easy is sound advice so list the Eagles classic and Here I Go Again, Whitesnake, seems appropriate too.
At a total length of 8 minutes and 24 seconds, Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing is a certain listing, timed for around the Wangetti area, or Mowbray going by recent chat from motorists. Listen to the song while sitting in the car and have a live film clip for it out the passenger window.
Paradise, Coldplay, and Running Up That Hill, Kate Bush, well depict the life of a Cook Highway construction worker and traffic controller, while the Big Yellow Taxi lyrics “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot” seems fitting for the drive by Pebbly Beach.
Go Your Own Way could be an option if Quaid Road isn’t closed, or if the petitions achieve the sensible outcome.
I reckon the closing song might as well be the Britney hit, you know the one that starts with ‘Oops!’, or maybe the Talking Heads hit Road To Nowhere.
But at a total play time of 58 minutes, my new mixed driving songs tape for the Range drive surely needs at least a few more songs if it is to cover the journey.
What’s your pick of the tunes to take you on the drive?
