A teenage boy has been arrested for breaking and entering and car theft after a stolen Kia Sportage ran off the Captain Cook Highway into a ditch yesterday.

Police allege the 16-year-old and an undisclosed number of other people entered a hotel room on Veivers Road at Palm Cove in the early hours of Friday morning (July 3) and stole the Kia car keys, then entered another room and stole more keys, passports and Japanese yen.

Police said they found the yen and other keys in the Sportage yesterday and returned them to the original owners.

The teenage boy was also charged with breaking into another Palm Cove resort on Thursday, July 2, where car keys and cash were stolen, and a unit on Veivers Road on Friday, July 3, where the occupant disturbed the potential thieves.

The boy, from Smithfield, has been charged with four counts of entering a dwelling and stealing a car, and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court on Wednesday, July 8.
