Young gun Malachy McTaggart won his first Mossman Bowls Club singles championship on Sunday, defeating Alby Wight 25-15.
McTaggart said after the win he was stoked about the breakthrough victory.
“I’ve made runner up in district singles twice, but I’ve never actually won a singles tournament,” McTaggart said.
“Last year I didn’t play, last two years I haven’t played, I went again this year and was stoked to come out with an actual win, so, very happy.”
The club congratulated McTaggart, saying he will now go to the District Champion of Club Champions playoffs with B Singles winner Mike Sims at Mareeba this Saturday, July 25.
Meanwhile, in the Club Pairs Semi Final on Saturday, Peter Busch and McTaggart defeated Wayne Parkes and Jason Pearce 32-12.
Jackpot Bowls winners were Warren McCoist, Barry Baker and Ted Holmes W+2, John Arnold and Richard Anderson W+5, Col Widdows and Brian Williams (SAS) W+6, Bernard Savage, Dick Pitt and David Turnbull W + 6 and Daryl Hoskin, Frank Rigoir and Steve Cue W+12.
The Jackpot 5 Club Pairs Final was today at 10am, Peter and Malachy vs Alby and Mike.
The Club Handicap Singles, to be played Sunday morning, are on the board.
Last week, the Mossman championship fours lost to Marlin Coast in the district play-offs at Atherton.

Sunday 12/7 Club B Singles Final Mike Sims defeated David White 25-23.
Soccer
Douglas United had a huge 11-3 win against Innisfail at home on Friday night in a rescheduled Round 7 clash, with two players hitting hat tricks.
This Friday night the Dragons are away at Atherton.
Rugby league
The Sharks lost to Cairns Brothers 4-46 on the road on Saturday, with Elijah Wallis scoring in the 67th minute.
Mossman are away to the Kangaroos this Saturday.
The women’s finals start this week, with Mossman missing out this season.
Rugby union
The Reef Raiders suffered a heavy away loss to Southside Crusaders on the weekend, going down 15-65.
Harry Erraji and Ryan Connors scored the tries.
This Saturday Port Douglas is away to Barron Trinity Bulls.
AFL Cairns
Port Douglas is back home this week against Manunda Hawks at 2pm on Saturday at Port Douglas Sporting Complex.
The women’s game starts at 10.15am.
