Our very own Douglas Shire artists have captured the attention of the national art world after a spectacular showing at a major Brisbane exhibition.

Far North Queensland was proudly represented at the third edition of the Affordable Art Fair Brisbane, Held at the Brisbane Exhibition Hall from May 7-10, by a talented local crew.

This powerhouse group included Chrissie McLaughlin, Jacqueline Joosen, Donna Ward, Stephanie Elizabeth, David Lloyd, and Perrin Clarke.

The prestigious event brought together more than 55 national and international galleries.

It attracted approximately 14,500 visitors over its four-day run, cementing its status as one of the country's most vibrant contemporary art events.

Douglas Shire galleries made a major splash at the fair, with “Art in Transit”, an online gallery representing FNQ artists, making its third appearance at the event.

The gallery further strengthened the profile of northern creators by showcasing extensive collections from Perrin Clarke, Chrissie McLaughlin, and Jacqueline Joosen.

Port Douglas-based Sea Gallery celebrated its very first time participating in the fair. The debut marked a massive success for owners Stephanie Elizabeth and David Lloyd.

Exhibiting alongside local artist Donna Ward, they secured strong sales and earned praise as a standout gallery of the show.

A major highlight of the fair was the work of Port Douglas photographer, framer, and printer Perrin Clarke.

This year, his new rounded-corner frame collection stole the spotlight. The handcrafted timber frames blur the line between artwork, design, and architecture.

They drew significant attention for their bold, contemporary form, encouraging viewers to see the frame as an integral part of the piece rather than just a border.

More artistic milestones

Adding to the region’s success, Tim Ellis was recently announced as a finalist in the prestigious Tattersall's Landscape Art Prize at Lethbridge Gallery Brisbane.

His piece, 'Stage Right', was captured at the Mossman Shire Hall. This marks the second time Tim has been a finalist in this exhibition.

The award winner will be announced on June 9, and the finalist exhibition will run until June 25.

Further exciting news for the local arts community is expected in the coming days. Port Douglas Artists Inc recently secured a major grant for an innovative, shire-wide project.

Details of the initiative will be announced following a presentation to the artists' group at its upcoming meeting on Tuesday.
