The FIFA World Cup of soccer starts this Friday, with a host of venues around town throwing their weight behind events and parties where the games - which are being played in Mexico, Canada and the US - will be televised.

This Sunday (June 14), several pubs across the district will be televising the Australia versus Turkey game from 2pm, including Paddy’s Irish bar in Macrossan Street.

On Tuesday, June 16, Oaks Port Douglas Resort will be holding an 11am brunch for the New Zealand versus Iran game.

While many of the games are on late at night, local venues are targeting the games being played from late morning to early afternoon to help get the World Cup spirit happening across the region.

The IronBar’s Greg “Harry” Potter, who is organising beach soccer games to coincide with the cup, says Dougies Backpackers and N17 are also keen to show as many games as possible, and the IronBar will be open from 10am.

“We’re putting together a calendar of different venues so people know where they can watch around Port Douglas,” Harry says.

Keep an eye out for the calandar at venues across the area.
