5000 sandbags ordered in readiness for Narelle

Douglas Shire Council has ordered an additional 5000 sandbags to bolster local sandbag stations.
Current stations remain stocked and the extra supply, due to arrive next week, is part of Council’s ongoing preparedness as the region braces for more wet weather.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Tropical Cyclone Watch from Lockhart River to Port Douglas, with a high chance of a cyclone developing and bringing significant rainfall to Far North Queensland from mid-week.
Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said Council was taking sensible steps to stay ahead of community needs.
“Our shire is already saturated, and with the Bureau forecasting heavy rain across the Far North, we’re making sure our community has the resources it needs,” Mayor Scomazzon said.
“We’re topping up our supplies to ensure we remain well-prepared for whatever this system brings.”
She said recent improvements at sandbag stations were already helping residents prepare more easily.
“We’ve added new scoops and bag holders and people have told us they’re much easier to use. Small upgrades like these make a real difference when the weather turns quickly.”
