Disaster funding freed up for Daintree flooding victims
Shire weather
Government emergency payments of $180 per person and up to $900 for families of more than four have been made available for those affected by Daintree region flooding last Friday.
The joint federal-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements money pool has been activated to offer personal hardship grants for essentials like food, clothing and medicine.
And a range of other hardship grants are available for vulnerable households including up to $80,000 to help make damaged homes safe and liveable and funds to help pay for essential services and products such as electricity, gas, water, sewerage, bed linen and whitegoods.
Douglas Shire residents in Cape Tribulation, Cow Bay, Daintree, Daintree Village, Degarra, Diwan, Lower Daintree, Thornton Beach and Upper Daintree are being encouraged to apply for the emergency funding.
The DSC is currently working with the State and Federal Governments to have Bloomfield, Dagmar, Noah, Forest Creek, Kimberly and Stewart Creek Valley included on the list.
Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain said this is a difficult time for people whose lives have been turned upside down.
“Activating hardship assistance is an important first step to help people recover from the impacts of this disaster and to build hope for the future,” Minister McBain said.
“We’re continuing to monitor the impacts of this flood event and will announce further support measures as required.”
And flood-impacted not-for-profits in Douglas Shire can also apply for disaster loans of up to $100,000 via qrida.qld.gov.au or by calling 1800 623 946.
The loans can be used for a range of measures including fixing damaged equipment, replacing stock, and covering wages, rent or rates.
Affected residents can visit disaster.qld.gov.au for further information.
The Queensland Community Recovery Hotline is available as well for Queenslanders needing urgent disaster support, with officers taking calls 24/7 on 1800 173 349.
