POLICE NEWS: Port Douglas man charged with robbery with violence
Police News
A 22-year-old Port Douglas man has been arrested in Cairns after a 54-year-old woman was injured during a bag-snatching incident on Saturday.
At about 10.30am on March 7, the woman visited a business on Mulgrave Road and left with a plastic shopping bag containing cigarettes.
The man allegedly approached the woman from behind as she returned to her parked car and grabbed her bag, before a struggle ensued.
The bag ripped, cigarette packets fell on the ground, and the woman pushed the man away as he attempted to grab them.
The man allegedly pushed the woman before stealing the packets and running along Mulgrave Road towards a nearby shopping centre.
Members of the public chased the man, grabbed the cigarettes and returned them to the woman, who was treated by paramedics for minor injuries.
Police officers arrested the 22-year-old a short time later and charged him with robbery with violence.
Bail was refused, and he was scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
Police are urging the witnesses who helped the lady to contact them.
