Wonga Beach Rural Fire Brigade volunteer Ellen Ross has been recognised for her tireless service and dedication to her community as part of the Northern Region Rural Fire Service Queensland Awards.

The International Women’s Day Rural Fire Award recipient started her volunteering at the age of 52 with the Maryfarms Rural Fire Brigade and put her ongoing dedication to the fire service down to the many other volunteers she had met along the way.

“I have met many volunteers over the years, from all walks of life, none of this would have been possible without a good crew behind me, and the support I have always had from the staff at our Cairns office,” Mrs Ross said.

Ellen did not start volunteering until retiring and moving to Wonga Beach and began working her way up to being a Crew Leader in 2008.

She has held medium and heavy rigid licences and did a lot of time driving for the call-outs and is famous for her caramel tart and cheesecakes.
