Today is World Press Freedom Day, and Newsport is inviting the Douglas Shire community to help keep our local reporting free and independent by having your donation doubled as part of a nationwide campaign.

Starting May 3, every dollar you contribute will be matched, ensuring your support goes twice as far in keeping our news accessible and paywall-free.

Since these national funds are limited and shared across Australian newsrooms, we encourage you to give early to ensure your impact is doubled before the funds are exhausted.

As a proud member of the Local Independent News Association (LINA), Newsport is participating in this national campaign to support independent, community-based newsrooms.

What is the Local Independent News Association (LINA)?

LINA is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting grassroots, community-based newsrooms across Australia.

Their mission is to protect local voices and ensure that public interest journalism - the kind that holds leaders accountable and informs your daily life - stays alive in regional areas.

Through LINA’s “Our News. Your Voice” initiative, a national match-funding pool has been established to support member newsrooms like Newsport.

The match-funding pool is shared across newsrooms nationwide, meaning funds are limited and only available until the national pool is exhausted.

Why your support matters

Most of us are used to reading the news for free, but it takes time and resources to investigate, write, and publish those stories.

As an independent newsroom, Newsport isn't funded by the government or big corporations.

Instead, we rely on community support to stay sustainable and keep our platform free for everyone.

Your contribution ensures that important local information is never hidden behind a paywall and our fortnightly print edition remains free.

Your contributions directly fund our local reporting team, allowing us to provide:

  • Breaking news and emergency updates
  • Coverage of local events and community voices
  • Fact-driven reporting

Thank you for championing Newsport and independent journalism in our community!
