Thieves raid Daintree fruit stall

Operators of the Daintree Gateway Fruit Stall have been left frustrated by a late night fruit raid with two individuals helping themselves to produce while leaving only a fraction of the money the haul was worth.
Security footage at the stall captured the theft at 11:03pm, on Sunday, May 3, when two individuals wearing masks attended the Daintree Gateway Fruit Stall in what appears to be an older model Toyota LandCruiser.
“They did leave some money… but only a fraction of what was taken,’’ wrote operator Nadia Sinkovich.
“We understand times are tough and the cost of living is affecting everyone, but underpaying - especially while masked - isn’t the same as doing the right thing.
“Our stall runs on honesty and supports local growers and families.’’
Nadia says the matter has been reported to police and locals believe they also have recorded the numberplate of the vehicle involved.
Nadia has asked for people to share the post and get in contact if you recognise the people or the vehicle.
“Please share - our community looks after each other, and this isn’t in the spirit of that,’’ she said.
“I donated 200kg of fruit over the river during the recent floods… it is all about community and goodwill.
“This flies in the face of that, particularly after such hardship in our area.’’
It may not have been just the popular Daintree stall hit, with Diwan fruit stand operator Claudia suggesting the same pair may have targeted their stand.
“Hey Nadia, Claudia here from Diwan, we also have a fruit stall. These exact people drove into our property last night around 9.30-10pm with most likely the same intention,’’ she posted.
“When my partner came out to see what they were doing they drove away quickly. He went looking for them around our place to try and get the number plates but couldn't catch them because obviously he crossed the ferry and went to your side.
“In the last two weeks we had a few thefts and all the neighbors around here noticed suspicious behavior and are on the watch for them!’’
