A learner driver who allegedly crashed into a ditch on the Captain Cook Highway while driving alone has been charged with blowing more than five times the legal alcohol limit that a fully qualified driver is allowed in their system.

Police said they recorded an alcohol reading of 0.276 for the woman after she allegedly crashed on the corner of Buchan Street and the Highway at Palm Cove on Tuesday, October 6.

Learner drivers in Queensland are not permitted to have any alcohol in their system and are required to have a driver with a full licence in the car at all times.

The woman has been charged with drink driving and unsupervised learner driving.

She is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Friday, November 27.
