Driven to find some common sense
Jungle Juice
Julatten folk, I reckon Christmas has come early if you live up the hill among the rainforest, with news that the Mossman to Mount Molloy Road repairs are pretty much complete… just in time for another season!
It might have taken three years, but you gotta hand it to the workers there, that's a rapid repair pace compared to another example heading in the other direction.
I’m no road engineering expert - although I did design a “soft-touch” bumper bar for the Datto from some of the displaced guard railing for some Cassowary co-existence driving in the Daintree - but it looks a pretty thorough job they have done.
A tip of my Crocs 2026 Premiers cap to them.
The roadworkers, I mean, not the pen pushers way down the road in their city offices who have no idea that with a bit of regional and bush ingenuity you can not only get a road fixed and open to traffic in under three years (I have my fingers crossed), you could probably even open one up, permanently, and fix a lot of problems for future years.
Sure, Quaids will need a bit of work but judging by the amount of orange flashing lights north of Cairns, there’s plenty of workers… three times the number of blokes who got the job done in around five years in the first place in a fraction of the cost.
Of course, it would cost a hell of a lot more now to build Quaids. Engineers, Human Resources staff and associated folder holders don’t come cheap.
But I reckon it is worth it. Because there’s something seriously wrong with our only option of getting from Port to Cairns means the Datto can keep up with those flash Ferraris that flew around here at the weekend.
They might look the goods, but I tell you now, they sure ain’t no match for those potholes we love around here.
And there’s no chance of fitting a Cassowary catcher on them.
