From snow to STEM local schools celebrate big achievements
SCHOOL WRAP
From STEM projects to visiting parliament in Canberra and water safety training, students across our local schools have had an action-packed term.
Daintree students reach for the stars
For the second year running, students won first place and the Crowd Choice Award at the Regional Maker’s Empire Kids in Space STEM Challenge in Cairns.
Senior students also enjoyed an educational camp to Canberra, visiting Parliament House, Questacon, and the Australian Mint.
Back at school, St John Ambulance taught essential first aid skills, while participation in the Douglas Libraries’ Youth Anthology Program helped students explore resilience. At Daintree State School, they may be small, but they think big!
Wonga Beach State School - STEM-Tastic Day
Wonga Beach State School held its annual STEM Fair, showcasing incredible creativity and curiosity.
Miss Naomi shared, "One of the greatest joys of our STEM Fair is seeing our students work in partnership with their families to plan, design, experiment, and create their displays."
Attendees enjoyed hands-on science challenges and an "Out of this World" escape room created by WBSS STEM ambassadors for their Maker’s Empire Showcase.
Congratulations to division winners Ellouise (‘Cooking Fish without Heat’) and Jasmine (autonomous Wiggle Bot), as well as runners-up Liam (photosynthesis display with a 3D-pen flower) and Nyal & Brooke (edible glass creation).
"Events like this are a wonderful celebration of the thinkers, creators, problem-solvers, and future innovators in our school community," said Principal Mrs Cubit. Keep an eye out for the next STEM Fair in August!
Port Douglas State School Canberra trip
Thirty-four Year 6 students headed off on an epic journey of over 2,000 km to Canberra, decked out in travel shirts kindly sponsored by Raine and Horne.
Though they didn't get to meet the Prime Minister, students were thrilled to meet Governor-General Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn.
Their packed itinerary included visits to the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, Government House, AIS, Questacon, Corin Forest Snow Park, the High Court, Royal Australian Mint, Electoral Education Centre, National Capital Museum, and National Arboretum. Key highlights included the War Memorial, meeting Ms Mostyn, and playing in the snow!
Mossman State School
Mossman State School started the term strong with three weeks of its annual Water Safety program for Prep to Year 6 during HPE lessons with Ms Abigail Noli.
Supported by Ms Ilonka, Mrs Lisa Armbrust, and Mrs Ruby Gregory, students learned crucial swimming and water safety skills.
The program concluded with the Senior and Junior Swimming Carnivals, with students showing wonderful growth in water confidence.
Perfect Scores for Mossman High Seniors
Mossman State High School is celebrating an exceptional double milestone, with two senior students achieving flawless academic records.
Year 12 student Sophie Ziesler scored a perfect 50 out of 50 across all three of her internal assessments in Marine Science. Her clean sweep puts her in a fantastic position as she heads into her final external exams.
Meanwhile, Ella Ke earned her own perfect 50 out of 50 studying Psychology through the Brisbane School of Distance Education. Demonstrating impressive self-motivation and discipline, Ella will be formally recognized at the distance education school's upcoming Presentation of Awards Ceremony.
The entire Mossman High community is incredibly proud of both students and wishes them the best of luck as they wrap up their senior year!
St Augustine’s Students Step Up for Socktober
Students at St Augustine’s School Mossman have put their best foot forward for a great cause, taking part in Socktober to raise funds and awareness for Catholic Mission.
Socktober provides an opportunity for students to learn about the lives of children and communities around the world while taking practical action to make a difference. Through their participation, St Augustine’s students embraced the importance of compassion, generosity and helping others.
As part of the initiative, students put on their favourite socks and helped raise money to support the work of Catholic Mission. The funds donated will contribute to Catholic Mission’s work supporting communities in need. For St Augustine’s, the initiative also provided a meaningful way for students to put their Catholic faith into action and recognise that even small acts of generosity can have a positive impact on others.
St Augustine’s School extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to Socktober and helped students make a difference beyond their own community.
