BUSINESS FEATURE

Helping local kids thrive through play is at the heart of Nurturing Life Connections. After three years of mobile paediatric therapy across the Douglas Shire and Cairns, the practice is expanding with an online shop, bringing clinically tested developmental toys straight into local homes.

Founded by Paediatric Allied Health Therapist Jazmyn Vaughan, the practice supports children aged 0 to 12 navigating developmental delays, trauma, or social and emotional challenges, including NDIS participants.

Her approach centers on a simple philosophy: children learn and heal best when they feel connected to themselves, their families, and the world around them.

Through play-based learning and nature therapy, Ms Vaughan and her team help young clients grow, build motor skills, and improve emotional regulation.

Now, alongside their ongoing mobile client sessions, they are making their exact clinical toolkit directly accessible to parents.

“In our daily work with children, we see exactly which toys spark pure joy, soothe busy minds, and unlock true self-expression,” Ms Vaughan said.

“Every item in our shop is chosen because it actively builds your child up and supports their emotional well-being.”

Online toy shop

The idea for the online shop grew directly out of field work. Early on, therapists hauled heavy trolleys of standard toys to home visits, only to watch children lose interest quickly.

Switching to high-quality, open-ended tools changed everything.

Observing which toys held a child's attention week after week ultimately shaped both the practice's therapy model and its new storefront collection.

“We found children would play with the exact same item for an entire year, expanding their creativity and cognitive abilities while playing in new ways every session,” Ms Vaughan explained.

The online store features a broad collection of developmental tools tailored to different learning needs.

To help families find the right fit, the website includes developmental filters matching toys to specific goals like emotional regulation, fine motor skills, body awareness, and managing big feelings, complete with expert notes on every item detailing its developmental benefits.

Stapelstein stepping stones are just one example of the tools available. These versatile, recyclable stepping stones double as balance boards holding up to 150 kg, explicitly designed so parents can comfortably join in on the fun.

“On average, children need at least 30 minutes of daily one-on-one interaction with a parent to meet key developmental milestones,” Ms Vaughan noted.

“These toys make it easier for parents to get down on their child's level and play together.”

In sessions, therapists curate specific toy collections based on goals set with the family; such as motor skills or social-emotional regulation, while still giving the child freedom to choose how they explore.

Local pop-ups & free delivery

To try out some of the toys in person, Nurturing Life Connections is hosting community pop-up events, kicking off on October 24 at Brinsmead Cairns.

The event will feature interactive sensory play setups, giving parents a "try before you buy" experience and a chance to observe how therapists use the tools to guide child development naturally.

To further support local families, the practice is offering free local drop-off delivery on qualifying orders across Port Douglas, the Douglas Shire, and Cairns.
