Mareeba Shire Council has called on the community to provide feedback on the Draft Mareeba Shire Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2026–2036 (Strategy), which sets the direction for waste and resource recovery services across the Shire over the next 10 years.

The Strategy is an important step towards a sustainable and financially responsible approach to waste and resource recovery in Mareeba Shire.

Through gradual improvements and collaboration with the community, Council can reduce reliance on landfill and improve environmental outcomes for current and future generations.

The Strategy also considers the results of the Mareeba Shire Waste Survey conducted earlier this year.

The Strategy comprises of four key objectives:

1. Establish an affordable and financially responsible pathway for waste and resource recovery in Mareeba Shire.

2. Avoid creating waste through education, awareness and informed decision-making.

3. Protect the environment and community from the impacts of waste generation, handling and disposal.

4. Recover maximum value from materials where practical and economically viable, supporting resource recovery opportunities and the development of a local circular economy.

“The updated Strategy is critical to Council operations and addresses the evolving nature of the waste and resource recovery sector,” Mayor Toppin said.

“We encourage the community to view the Draft Strategy on Council’s website and provide feedback during the public consultation period.”

People can view the Draft Strategy on Council’s website and submit feedback by emailing [email protected].

The public consultation period closes at 5.00pm on November 25, 2026.
