A desperate search for a young Dachshund named Bobby is being embraced by the community of Douglas Shire, and his owners and friends have made a plea to people to not give up hope.

The one-year-old much loved family pet was on a “sleepover” at Cooya Beach at the start of the weekend when he managed to slip out of the yard and wander off.

On Monday night, with Bobby missing for four days, Jackie Osborne made an appeal on social media with Newsport’s help and dozens of people responded to be on the lookout for the dog, which belongs to a friend.

“He lives in Port Douglas and we think, we hope, he is on his way home,” Jackie said.

“There was a possible sighting of him in the cane fields so we are hoping that he is trying to make his way back home.”

This morning, Tuesday, there had been no further sightings of Bobby, but there is a band of people chipping in to help in the search.

In another post on the Port Douglas - Mossman Notice Board, Jackie detailed the one-year-old plain brown/red Dachshund (sausage dog) was wearing a blue collar with his name on it.

“He got out while staying at Cooya Beach and was seen around the beach/mangroves. In Cooya beach. But was scared and ran away,’’ she said.

“We’ve now also had a possible sighting of him running through a cane field heading towards Port Douglas/Craiglie. Bobby actually lives in Craiglie, so he may be trying to make his way home.

“Please keep an eye out around Cooya Beach, Captain Cook Highway, cane fields and the Craiglie/Port Douglas area.

“He is very frightened, so please don’t chase him. If you see him, keep him in sight if possible and call us straight away.

“We desperately want Bobby home with his family.”
