Obviously the idea needs refining. We can't force thriving tourism in Australia to keep failing. An exemption of all those new fees with pre-requisites would solve the problem bcos they are not going to pay this much when they can go elsewhere.

When advertising request for locals as your first choice you will be surprised. Locals think they have no chance because we are not preferred. Look in your own backyard first. Try and work together as a community.

Gregg Buchanan

Locals don't want to do shift work, or bar or waitressing jobs where they will be laid off in the wet season. This is why the backpacker option is perfect for Port.

Superior Stays Port Douglas

Zan Lea, with respect, in a perfect world, if more locals were willing to do the type of work we require, it would mean greater productivity for business owners and far less time and money spent constantly recruiting and retraining staff. Unfortunately, the reality is that many local workers simply don’t want the hours or the types of jobs that working holiday makers are willing to take on. It can be incredibly difficult to find young Australians who are prepared to consistently show up every day and do this kind of work. For many businesses, working holiday makers aren’t replacing willing local workers - they’re filling positions we genuinely struggle to fill.

Superior Stays Port Douglas well said. It’s so true!

If only there was a road nearby that could be used whilst Kuranda and Mossman are repaired properly. If only.

My favourite job of all time was working with The Bally Hooley Railway. I am sooo glad I was part of an iconic business and I am still so upset it closed down but it was inevitable.

Rob Mason

Now there's no cane, this train should be travelling daily.

Katrina McCoist

Russell Eddleston that brings back a few memories.

Patricia Hoffman Veschetti
