How Sportspower Owner Pete Gilmour is tackling first time fatherhood
FATHER’S DAY
Port Douglas local Pete Gilmour, owner of Sportspower, is loving life in his favourite role yet: first-time dad to his 14-month-old daughter, Islay.
Pete is used to helping locals gear up for an active lifestyle, but these days, his favourite workouts involve chasing after an active toddler.
Islay recently started walking, and Pete and his partner, Cheryl, are soaking up every moment of her milestone-filled phase.
“She stood very early, took a while to actually walk, but now she’s kicking off and getting very chatty,” Pete says. “We’re both absolutely smitten with her.”
Islay has already embraced the active, outdoor lifestyle, regularly joining her dad for morning outings and local sports events around town.
“I love taking Islay to the local markets on Saturday morning for a couple of hours of quality morning time,” Pete says.
“She also loves the beach and being taken to sports events, we spend a lot of time down at the rugby club. She just loves being outside around people.”
When it comes to Father’s Day gift inspiration for dads who love getting outdoors, Pete has a few easy recommendations.
“Running is really popular right now, getting a good pair of shoes is always a great starting point," he shares.
Sports like tennis and pickleball are also growing rapidly and are fantastic options for family-friendly activities.”
Heading into Father's Day, Pete offers simple advice for other dads navigating life with young babies.
“Be present. If you're ever having a hard day, just spend quality time with your kid. Even when you feel like you're doing everything for them, just being there with them makes everything better.”
