Mossman seniors deliver high energy sports day
ANNUAL SPORTS GALA
The term ended on a high note last Friday, September 18, as Mossman State High School’s Year 12 Sport and Recreation students put weeks of preparation to the ultimate test by hosting the annual Gala Day.
As part of their final assessment, the seniors were tasked with running every aspect of the major sporting carnival for visiting Year 5 primary students from across the cluster.
To bring the event to life, the class split into five specialised teams covering communications, logistics, catering, health and safety, and event evaluations.
Guided by Year 12 students who designed skill-building drills, coordinated games, and refereed, visiting Year 5s spent the day honing their athletic skills across Touch Football, Soccer, AFL, Basketball, and Netball.
The preparation required weeks of dedicated effort behind the scenes.
“We spent about four or five weeks on it,” said Year 12 student Kolby Irving.
“We had to deal with our own workplace health and safety forms and figure out which drills would work best.”
For senior Jerome Csontos, digging into that prep work was the highlight of the project.
“I liked finding the drills because you get to research and muck around with a bunch of new stuff you haven't heard of before,” he said. “That was really fun.”
Head of Senior School and Transitions Mrs Belinda Guthrie was full of praise for how the event unfolded.
“All participating students were well behaved and enthusiastic throughout the day,” Mrs Guthrie noted.
“The Year 12 students performed extremely well and should be tremendously proud of how the day came together. What a great way to end the term!”
Even the weather joined in on the success, remaining sunny and bright until the final wrap-up, when a brief shower marked the end of an impressive event.
Congratulations to all the Year 12 students on completing their final assessment with flying colours!
