Motorcyclist’s 20,000km ride for debilitating disease hits Port Douglas for fundraiser

A 20,000-kilometre solo motorbike ride around Australia lands in Port Douglas this Wednesday, 2 September, as rider Nigel Howard arrives for a special event at Crystalbrook Marina’s Boat House Venue to battle Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

Howard departed from Daylesford, Victoria on 20 August to begin his 38-day nationwide trek, known as the MND Beast Challenge.

Aiming to raise $150,000 for the cause, he has already generated more than $93,000 along his journey.

He decided to take on the massive journey to turn personal heartbreak into action after his mate and long-time mentor shared his own MND diagnosis over a coffee.

Riding to raise awareness and vital funds for research, Howard aims to ensure no family has to face the condition alone.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a fatal condition that destroys the nerves controlling voluntary muscles, gradually robbing people of their ability to walk, talk, swallow, and breathe. With no known cure, funding research is critical.

Fundraising event at the Boat House

To mark his arrival in Port Douglas, a local motorcycling contingent will form a 12-bike guard of honour as Howard pulls into the Port Douglas Crystalbrook Marina, celebrating his courageous journey across the continent.

Following his arrival, a community fundraising event will take place at The Boat House Venue at Crystalbrook Marina from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

In 2014, the late Neale Daniher AO, Pat Cunningham, and the late Dr Ian Davis OAM founded FightMND.

Their vision? A world free from motor neurone disease (MND).

Their determination sparked a movement, uniting Australians from coast to coast in the fight against this relentless disease.

Today, thanks to the generosity of the Australian community, FightMND invests in vital research and programs which provide essential support for Australians affected by MND.

All ticket sales and funds raised throughout the evening will go directly to FightMND to carry on the campaign for a cure.

DAINTREE NATIVE NURSERY MANAGER PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The purpose of the position is to help protect and conserve the unprotected lowland Daintree Rainforest through reforestation and to provide excellent native trees as products for restoration services and partners in the region. The role is based at the Rainforest Rescue Daintree native nursery. The focus of the position is to manage the nursery and nursery staff and support Rainforest Rescue's conservation and community engagement efforts in the wider Daintree area. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Manage all aspects of the nursery, including staff management; seed collection and propagation; plant maintenance; invasive species and pest management; and maintenance of nursery facilities. The role involves engaging and supervising volunteers and the local community in the work of the nursery and wider conservation of the Daintree Rainforest. Welcome solo rider Nigel Howard as he arrives in Port Douglas on his 20,000 km nationwide motorbike trek for FightMND. Greeted by a 12-bike guard of honour at 5:30 PM, Nigel is riding to raise $150,000 for vital Motor Neurone Disease research.
