Mossman Gorge is one of the region's premier tourist attractions.

Every Mossman Gorge tourist who rides the bus from the cultural centre to the park is being hit with a new State Government tax of $2.70 from mid October.

Once the new fee is applied from Sunday, October 18, an adult ticket will cost $18.20, up from $15.50, a child will cost $10.45, up from $7.75, and a family ticket will cost close to $50, up from $38.75 now.

A report set to be tabled in today’s Douglas Shire Council meeting outlines reasons for the new tax.

The new fee will “flow directly to the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation” under their park-management arrangements with the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation Department (DETSI), the report states.

“This fee increase and proposal is fully supported by Jabalbina,” according to the DSC report.

Reasons given for the new tax include to “support the sustainable environmental management of Mossman Gorge and the Daintree National Park", and “provide additional financial support for the ongoing maintenance of protected areas”.

The Mossman Gorge visitor centre and bus are run by Voyages Tourism Australia under the trading name Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre.

The DSC is expected to rubberstamp the new tax in today’s full council meeting.

Douglas Shire residents get free rides on the Mossman Gorge bus if they show the correct ID.
