The Mossman Sharks Under-14 rugby league team blitzed the Edmonton Storm in the Grand Final on Saturday to come away with a 46-6 victory.
Scrum-half Ryland Ross-Kelly was voted Player of the Match in the commanding victory.
“Our Sharkies put on a show today,” a club spokesperson said.
“Big effort, big defence, big attack - and plenty of points on the board!”
Soccer
Douglas United will enter the FNQ community soccer division one Preliminary Final in fine form after trouncing fourth-placed Innisfail 7-1 in the semi on Friday night.
Daniele Cirani scored a hat-trick in the lopsided result, while Raffie Mulcahy scored two and Gonzalo Becerra and Georges Laulhe slotted home one each.
At one stage early in the second half the score was 2-1 after Innisfail was awarded a penalty, but the Dragons put the foot down after that to score five goals in a little over half an hour, with Cirani running riot.
United will face Atherton from 6.30pm this Friday night at Endeavour Park in Cairns after that team lost to Southside Comets in the other semi final.
The winner will face the Comets in the Grand Final in Cairns on Friday, September 18.
AFL Cairns
The Port Douglas Crocs suffered another agonising loss to second-placed South Cairns Cutters on Saturday to throw the AFL Cairns premiership race wide open.
After going through most of the season undefeated, the Crocs lost the final minor round game to the Cutters by a kick after the siren, and last weekend lost the Qualifying Final by three points, 8.16 (64) to 7.10 (67).
Arguably the better team on the day, inaccurate kicking proved the downfall of Port Douglas, including starting the second quarter with seven straight points.
The Crocs kicked the first goal of the match, but fell behind after South Cairns answered with three goals of their own.
The game was proving a physical encounter, with several scuffles and Crocs star Jared Petrenko in particular coming in for some rough treatment from his Cutters opponents.
He held up firm, and continued on to be one of Port’s best on the day.
The scores were level at three-quarter time, but the Crocs were again wasteful in a tense final stanza, kicking 1.7 to 2.2 to go down by less than a goal.
Other good players included Jake Cook, Brodie Francis and Ben McPhee.
The Elimination Final was equally exciting, with Trinity Bulldogs winning by two points against the Cairns Saints in a match which included several lead changes in the final quarter.
Port Douglas will face Trinity in the Preliminary Final this Saturday from 5pm at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns for a chance to take on South Cairns in the Grand Final.
The Port Douglas reserves had a good win in their Qualifying Final, defeating Trinity 15.7 (97) to 7.6 (48).
They are through to the Grand Final, and will face the winner of the Saints versus Bulldogs game this weekend.
The Crocs women lost their Elimination Final to Trinity 2.2 (14) to 10.7 (67) and are out of the finals race.
Lawn bowls
On Saturday 24 bowlers from Marlin Coast Bowls Club visited Mossman for the Jo and Nev Trophy, the third year of this event being played between the two clubs, which was previously held at Marlin Coast.
This Year Mossman were the winners 178 shots to 128.
There were eight rinks of three-bowl triples played, with each team playing two games of 10 ends.
The club gave a big thank you to the Girgenti family and Nev for their support.
