What a great day it turned out to be for the 2026 Mossman District Rifle Club prize meeting on Saturday 13 June. A little drizzle early in the day didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the 38 competitors. The skies cleared with warm sunshine and a mild breeze kept the mirage away. Prior to commencement, Club members and those present paid their respect to one of the clubs longest serving members, Ron Schild. Ron was a member of the club for over 73 years, a dedicated shooter who represented North Qld at numerous significant events Australia wide. Ron held the position of Treasurer of both the Mossman Club and the Cairns and Inland District Association. He was instrumental in securing the establishment of the new club house, and sourcing materials and working hands on during the major rebuild of the Butts. The club and its facilities stand today as a tribute to his hard work and commitment. The ceremony was attended by Ron’s son, David and Ian Barton, a previous long term member who paid tribute with a speech. Rick Mischlewski, another long-term member of the club performed the association's ritual of the ‘last shot” dedicated to this outstanding man. The competition consisted of 2 x 10 shot rounds at 500m and 1 x 15 shot round at 600m. The Indoor comp has been a little all over the place with many of the teams playing some, then missing a few, then playing a few more at times, but the results for the second week have now been finalised. Teams just need to play 8 rounds and finish in the top 4 for the finals series. Played around the US Open course, Aronimink, the winners for the week were Matt & Troy with 25points which included 5 birdies! Peter and Ashleigh Hay were second only 1 point behind and the Irish lads Sean and Peter were third. The Hole In One Jackpot is now up to $200 and anyone can have 3 shots at it for $5. 6.6.26 We had 16 shooters on the mound today for our Double 300 match. Another perfect Winter day in FNQ. A great turn out with visitors Boyd, Charley, Anna, Neung, Tegan and Martin all joining in. F Std: First up was Brenday Delaney with 56.0 followed by Bill Kromwyk scoring 56.2, then Martin hit a 50.2, Cameron Leyshon shot 56.3 then John Brentson scored 56.2 up next was Paul Teichert shooting 56.4 then Tegan hit a 60.3. FTR: Boyd scored 57.2 then Charley hit a 58.7 and Neung shot a 54.1. Sporter Hunter: Andy Vance scored 47.1 then Tom Baetscher hit a 50.7 followed by Fabian Wilson scoring 45.2 up next was Glen Cannard with 34.0 and Annah scored 47.1. F Std: First up was Brendan Delaney with 49.1 followed by Bill Kromwyk scoring 58.2, Cameron Leyshon shot 54.1 up next was John Brentson shooting 58.4. Sporter Hunter: Fabian Wilson scored 49.5 then Tom Baetscher hit a 50.7 followed by Dion Muirhead with 45.3 and Nate Muirhead shot a 49.5. 23.05.26 We had eight shooters today for our Double 600 match. Warm, sunny with a light breeze. We welcomed Ralph & Trixie Loesche from Cairns Club. F Std: First up was Brendan Delaney opening with 52.1 then Cameron Leyshon with 60.5 followed by John Brentson on 50.2 up next was Trixie Loesche with 58.3 and Ralph Loesche shot 59.6. Sporter Hunter: Tom Baetscher scored 49.5 followed by Andy Vance with 49.7 and Liz Vance shot a 49.5. Week 1 of the new Indoor League and last year's Grand Finalists sent a strong message to the other teams with their demolition in the first round. Dave and Rhys had 27 points around The Hills course, which included 3 birdies and 6 pars to start the new league on top of the ladder. Matt and Troy came in second place fighting off a few countback groups as 22 points was a popular score. This week's course is Aronimink, which held the PGA Championship last week. We have 7 teams in the league and room for plenty more if you are keen.
