Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch has thrown his support behind a Douglas Shire resident’s audacious bid for Port Douglas or Mossman to gain its own Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) automated weather station.

As is stands the Douglas Shire is currently served by an automated system on Low Isles – perfect for providing latest weather offerings to boaties and sea dwellers – but inadequate for locals and tourists on land who need more accurate, precise, and specific latest weather offerings.

As such Tom Tyndall has taken his campaign to Mr Entsch, who in turn, just days ago sent off correspondence to BOM CEO Dr Andrew Johnson in an effort to help the proposal gain some real momentum.

“As you may know our region is visited by a significant number of tourists each year who rely on accurate weather information when planning their activities,” Mr Entsch noted in his letter to the BOM CEO.

“Accurate weather data is also essential for our local residents. While the Low Isles automated weather station serves the boating and aviation industries its location renders its data largely irrelevant for those on the mainland.

“In light of this issue, I would like to explore the possibility of securing a new BOM station in either Mossman or Port.

“This addition service would be of great value to both locals and visitors by ensuring they have access to accurate and reliable weather information.”

Mr Tyndall said securing such a radar would prove a win, win for those in the Douglas Shire.

“This service would provide a huge benefit to both locals and visitors,” he remarked.
