At our Douglas Shire schools there is never a dull moment. Newsport captures the highlights, accomplishments, and updates from these great schools that contribute to our wonderful region.

GRANDPARENTS DAY AT ST AUGUSTINE’S

At St Augustine's Primary School in Mossman, a heartwarming tradition took centre stage last week as the school came together to celebrate Grandparents Day.

This special occasion, dedicated to honouring the role that grandparents play in their grandchildren's lives, was a heartwarming and memorable event.

Ms Richelle Woods said the school recognises the profound impact that grandparents have on the students' upbringing.

“Their wisdom, love, and support create a strong foundation that greatly influences our students' lives,” Ms Woods remarked.

The grandparents were treated to an afternoon of food, fun, music, singing, dance and poetry.

“It was such a joy to see all the smiling faces on both the students and the grandparents,” Ms Woods said.

SWEET SURPRISE FOR MOSSMAN HIGH STUDENT

Excitement filled the air at Mossman High School on a sunny Tuesday afternoon as something mysterious was about to unfold.

A secret celebration was underway, and it was all for some students who had received 95 percent or greater ‘A’s for Effort and Behaviour on their Semester 1 report cards.

Students were kept in the dark as to the details of the event, only to find themselves boarding a bus headed for an unknown destination somewhere in Shannonvale.

On the journey, the air was filled with laughter and guesses about where they were headed until the bus came to a halt at the Australian Chocolate Farm.

The visit was more than just a treat for the taste buds. Students were taken on a tour of the farm, discovering the secrets behind the creation of our favourite sweet treats.

Adding a touch of inspiration to the day, Jenny and Darryl Kirk, former Mossman High School parents and owners of the farm, shared an important message with the students.

They spoke about the significance of dreams and aspirations, highlighting that even if you come from a small place like Shannonvale, you can still achieve big dreams.

NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS AT WONGA AND MIALLO STATE SCHOOLS

On Friday, July 28th, Wonga Beach State School lit up with NAIDOC Day festivities, welcoming a diverse range of activities and local community members.

Aunty Jan and Lou generously volunteered their time to introduce Yalanji teachings and traditional spearing techniques to the eager students, providing an engaging insight into our rich cultural heritage.

The young learners absorbed valuable knowledge, deepening their understanding of local traditions and customs.

Meanwhile at Miallo state school students were fortunate enough to have Lenice and Aunty Rosslyn visit the school for a couple weeks in a row, sharing their wealth of Kuku Yalanji knowledge.

Students learnt about a range of artefacts and traditional foods, painted boomerangs, flags or burnie beads and washed their hands using the soap bush.
