Following our story on the water leaks possibly linked to the installation of new smart water meters at Cooya Beach, a host of residents in Port Douglas have complained of similar problems affecting them.

On social media, residents have posted concerns that again, the recent installation of new ‘smart’ water meters have been linked with sudden leaks and higher than usual water bills from Council.

“Has anybody noticed the amount of water leaks out the front of numerous properties throughout Port Douglas/4 Mile?” Linda Luoos asked, referring to properties around the Limpet Avenue, Mitre Street and Nautilus St areas.

“Ive just noticed a lot whilst out walking the dog and I'm wondering who's paying for this is? Is it the residence, and if so, do you think we would be told if it was council at fault? Ive counted 3 this week. Anyone else noticed any?”

She also said she had received a “ridiculous water bill.”

Another resident said she had to get a leak on her property fixed, as well as pay a large water bill:

“I’ve just recently noticed I’ve now got a leak on the side near road and had the council out the other day and they said it was their issue and they will fix it asap. It’s been very frustrating since they changed the new meters!”

“We had this issue as well… all our taps leaking everywhere. We called council and they basically didn’t want to know about it…trying to dispute the bill.”

Douglas Council has previously defended the work of their contractors who installed the new smart meters, and referred homeowners who reported leaks to its ‘Concealed Leak Financial Assistance Policy.’

“Customers can access the form required to apply for assistance on the Douglas Shire Council website,” Mayor Michael Kerr responded to our previous story on water leaks at Cooya Beach.

“Customers with smart water meters may be eligible for a one-off claim for the first water bill issued following the installation of the smart water meter.”
