A number of retail businesses in the Douglas Shire have reached out to Newsport to convey a vital message: They are operating at full capacity for Christmas shopping, addressing concerns about limitations on travelling to Cairns for festive purchases.

While the aftermath of the recent post-cyclone Jasper floods has left some businesses in the Douglas Shire unable to open their doors, grappling with significant damage and water shortages, a noteworthy number of businesses have been able to reopen their doors and enthusiastically prepared to serve the community.

The collective call is to encourage local patronage for Christmas shopping, urging support for businesses during these challenging times.

Deborah McMahon, owner of local shop DeBoutique, said “I want to let everyone know that local family-owned businesses are open and eager for your support.”

The local shops are going the extra mile by offering special local discounts, providing an additional incentive for residents and visitors alike to explore the diverse offerings within the community.

In Mossman, Temptations Cafe is welcoming patrons with hot coffee and food, thanks to the readily available running water in Mossman, a contrast to Port Douglas which is currently facing a water supply cut-off.

Pia McKeown, owner of Temptations Cafe and the clothing boutique Casa Mia in both Mossman and Port Douglas, shared that they successfully reopened the boutique today after completing the cleanup from the recent floods.

“We are open and delighted to assist everyone in finding their perfect Christmas outfits,” she said.

However, the community is not oblivious to the struggles faced by businesses and emergency services in the Daintree region. While some businesses in the Shire celebrate their ability to continue serving the community, thoughts remain with those facing hardships.
