In an exciting move toward inclusivity and diversity, local AFL club, the Port Douglas Crocs, is set to make history by launching its very own women's side. The club, which is already a well-established and respected part of the community, is now extending its reach to foster women's participation in the beloved sport.

As it stands, Port Douglas is the only club within the AFL Cairns league without a women’s side but a strong show of interest over the past few months has seen a serious push from the club to get it off the ground for the 2024 season and are currently seeking interest for anyone who wants to join in.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played football before, everyone is welcome to come down and give it a go,” said Crocs Football Manager, Brad Cooper. “We’ve got a great culture down at the club and this is a chance to be social, have some fun and be a part of our community.”

The move towards a senior women’s team seems like a natural progression after a successful junior side was introduced this year. “We’re always looking to expand and grow as a club and with the amount of interest we’ve seen from the early training sessions it seemed like the right time,” Mr Cooper said.

Two “Come and Try” sessions will take place this Wednesday 13th and 20th at the Port Douglas Sports Complex for anyone interested in giving it a go. “There’s absolutely no commitment for these sessions, it’s just a chance to get down, meet the team and see if you like it,” Mr Cooper said.

The Port Douglas Crocs pride themselves on fostering talent and building a strong sense of community. The addition of a women’s team reflects the club's commitment to creating opportunities within the region while also contributing to the broader narrative of women’s involvement in traditionally male-dominated sports.
