Newsport’s Insta feed has never looked more tropical with an array of breezy palm tree pictures that were sent in by readers in this month’s photo competition. We interviewed the photographers of this month’s winning pictures and asked them what makes Port Douglas a great place for photography.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE WINNER

With the most likes on Instagram this month, our followers have chosen Alex Chesser’s “A stormy end to the afternoon” to be the People’s Choice Winner.

When Newsport asked Mr Chesser what inspired him to take this picture he answered:

“The Sugar Wharf and the river mouth are iconic in Port Douglas and such a relaxing place to be.The stormy skies, along with epic, moody sunset colours meant this was a moment not to be missed.

“Port Douglas and surrounds boast so much natural beauty, it really is perfect for any landscape photographer. From the river to the beach, as well as the many lookouts and vantage points you are never short of images to capture.

“The changing light and weather also means you can capture completely different images at exactly the same place.

“I really enjoy the variety of locations and the tropical scenery. The palm trees, the beaches and the coastal, laid back way of life resonate with me and are typical of my style of photography.

“The vibrancy of Port Douglas as well as how welcoming and friendly the town and its people are, is definitely unique and makes it one of the most special places on earth and the perfect place to document through photography.”

Mr Chesser has won a voucher of $50 for professional photography classes with Tracey Jones.

PROFESSIONAL PANEL’S CHOICE WINNER

Chosen by our professional photography panel, this month’s winning picture is “Sunlight through the palms” by Wayne Missingham.

Professional photographer Tracey Jones said about this picture:

“There is a great sense of balance in this image with the trees being lined up perfectly in the centre.

“I also like how this photographer has not been afraid to shoot towards the sun by blocking it from view behind the central trees. Finally the shadows in this image help to create lines which draw you into the image.”

Mr Missingham told Newsport about his picture:

“Rex Smeal is always a special place for locals, backpackers and anyone else visiting. I love the vibe that you experience when everyone gathers there. I am lucky to call Port Douglas home.

“The Douglas Shire has so many natural beauties from the blue ocean to the green mountains, the buzzing Sunday markets and just the paradise lifestyle. Hard not to take so many beautiful shots.

“The shire’s weather is constantly changing making it a feast of colours to capture taking the best pictures. Since living here, I am pretty sure my phone now has over 10,000 pictures taken in the Douglas Shire.”

Mr Missingham has won a $50 dinner voucher for the Tin Shed Port Douglas.
