PRESSING TOPICS AT BULMBA-JA ARTS CENTRE

If you’re up for some culture sniffing at the start of this new year, then the Bulmba-ja arts centre in Cairns is the right spot.

In one of their latest exhibitions issues related to gender socialisation, equality and labour are being addressed.

Using the iron, as the iconic symbol of domestic labour, Pressing Topics addresses issues related to the gendered and racialized oppression of our world’s domestic work force, the women.

This work attempts to disrupt the ideal proposition of the perfect housewife or the perfect domestic worker and aims to elevate and confront historical and ongoing contemporary issues of discrimination in the domestic labour force.

The Ironing Maidens, Melania Jack and Patty Preece, reorder the hierarchy associated with familiar domestic objects like iron boards, washing machines and ovens into a powerful instrument of criticality.

Go check it out!

Until 14 January. More info here.

BIRD ENCOUNTERS AT CAIRNS ART GALLERY

In the Far North we’re blessed with an immense variety of unique species of tropical birds.

Local artist Roland Nancarrow is fascinated by these beautiful creatures and showcases this through paintings and sculptures.

His works, exhibited at the Cairns Art Gallery, are a celebration of the unique species of birds that inhabit the Far North Queensland region, and a commentary on the artist’s deep concern for the effects of global warming on bird populations around the world.

Coupled with his fascination for birds, Nancarrow has an enduring passion for the tropics and on a trip to South America he turned his attention to the relationship between tropical birds and plant life.

On returning to Cairns, he increasingly studied local birds, their habitats, family relationships and breeding habits.

Until 15 January. More info here.
