In just over four months or so Douglas Shire residents will take to the polls to elect our new mayor and councillors.

With that in mind Newsport today starts its build up towards the March 16, 2024 local government elections by opening the floor to you, our valued and loyal readers.

Everyday you take the time to read our stories on Newsport or comment on them via our social media platforms.

The Douglas Shire is an issue rich community, with many poignant and worthwhile talking points regularly on the lips and minds of local residents.

This is an opportunity to start a conversation to hear your thoughts, opinions, feelings, sentiments, rationale and reason about how and what our Shire needs to maintain our idyllic lifestyle, while still being able to progress and move with the times.

So, with that said, we want to know, direct from you:

What do you believe are and should be key Douglas Shire priorities the newly elected mayor and Councillors should focus on after next March’s local government elections?

Naturally not all of these issues just fall under the local Council banner, profile, or jurisdiction, but rather State or Federal government portfolios as well.

Nonetheless, the main focus of this story and the ensuing poll is to simply gauge public Douglas Shire sentiment in order to evaluate and determine what you, our valued readers and Douglas Shire residents consider critical issues and matters of importance heading into next year’s highly anticipated local elections.

Five years from now, or even ten years from now, what do you want your Douglas Shire to look like? Do we need more housing? Is general cost of living an ongoing concern for you? Do you believe Macrossan St is looking shoddy?

Take our poll and contribute to the discussion both on our website through the comments section, or via our Facebook page.

Thank you!
