Alarmed by the statistic revealing that 1 in 4 young people in Australia currently grapple with mental health challenges, Susan Stafford, decided take proactive steps to address the pressing issue of youth suicide by swimming 31 kilometers and raising over $4000.

Ms Stafford’s participation in 'Laps for Life,' a March swimming challenge, sought to raise awareness of the growing youth suicide crisis and raise funds for programs aiding young individuals and families in need.

Despite the conclusion of the swimming challenge, she persists in fundraising efforts and urges donations through her donation page.

As a former Mental Health Nurse Ms Stafford has witnessed first hand the many issues which young people face today.

“I was the first responder to two incidents of someone attempting to take their own lives - fortunately both were saved- these were dramatic, unforgettable and impacted me significantly,” she shared.

"Being the first responder to two suicide attempts, both fortunately saved, were dramatic, unforgettable and impacted me significantly,” Ms Stafford shared.

“I stumbled upon Laps for Life on Facebook and after learning more about the cause, I felt compelled to take action; be the change you want to see in the community!.”

With support from the Port Douglas Sheraton Mirage Country Club, Ms Stafford embarked on her month-long swimming challenge, utilising their 25-metre pool.

“My initial fundraising goal was $1,000, and I had doubts about reaching it,” she explained. “However, the encouragement from my son and overwhelming support from others surpassed my expectations.

“While swimming, thoughts of those affected by suicide spurred me on and fueled my determination to achieve my goals.

“It’s shocking to know that according to the Laps for Life stats, 70% of those who need help don’t get it. And, suicide remains the leading cause of death of young people in Australia.

“Young people in the Douglas Shire need continual community support and understanding. Education and raising awareness of youth issues and stressors and the increasing prevalence and risks of youth suicide throughout Australia is paramount.

“Our young people are the future of Australia and we need to reach out to them, respect them, and be humble enough to learn from their ideas, suggestions and experiences!”

Apart from fundraising, Ms Stafford also continues her efforts as Youth Ambassador at the Mossman Rotary Club. Events such as pancake breakfasts at  Mossman State High School each term, are still supported on an ongoing basis by Mossman Rotary Club.

If you’re interested in joining the Mossman Rotary Club or being part of a Laps for Life team in March 2025, you can email Susan Stafford on [email protected].
