As the clock ticks toward the deadline, Douglas Shire residents await with bated breath to see who else will step into the ring for the upcoming elections. With only hours left to file nominations, the Douglas Shire Ratepayers Association (DSRA) is taking the initiative to shed light on the candidates' visions and platforms.

Scheduled for this Sunday at the picturesque Oaks Resort Port Douglas, the DSRA-organized forum promises a firsthand look at the contenders vying for four Councillor positions and the coveted Mayoral seat.

President of DSRA, John Sullivan, emphasized the importance of public engagement, extending a warm invitation to all concerned citizens.

"It's the only time we get a chance to see how the candidates react and talk to the public," remarked Mr. Sullivan in an exclusive statement to Newsport.

He emphasized the significance of direct interaction, noting that whether in person or via Douglas FM, the local radio station set to broadcast the event live, citizens deserve to gauge the confidence and conviction of their potential representatives.

Mr. Sullivan underscored the DSRA's commitment to community welfare, affirming their dedication to fostering informed decision-making among residents and ratepayers.

Forum purpose

The forum's primary objective, as outlined by Mr. Sullivan, is to provide a platform for candidates, particularly newcomers, to articulate their understanding of key issues facing the Shire and outline their goals.

"That's the biggest thing, what are their priorities? It's important we get to know each candidate; otherwise, it's an election of blind faith, and that doesn't serve the democratic process at all," Mr Sullivan stated unequivocally.

Contenders so far

As the nomination deadline looms, a diverse array of contenders has emerged, including Bill Allison, Chris Barber, Sara Mulcahy, Abigail Noli, Jeremy Blockey, Roy Zammataro, Michael Joseph, Damian Meadows, Terry Melchert and Peter McKeown. The two mayoral candidates include Lisa Scomazzon and David Haratsis.

The final roster will be unveiled once nominations close tomorrow at noon.

Where and when

The forum is scheduled to commence promptly at 10 a.m. on Sunday, February 18 at the Oaks Resort 87-109 Port Douglas Rd, Port Douglas and will feature local personality Phil Holloway as the master of ceremonies.

Attendees are urged to be seated by the designated time to ensure they don't miss a moment of this pivotal event in the Douglas Shire electoral calendar.
