Daintree Beach Resort in Wonga Beach: plans for a bar with public access. Picture: Daintree Beach Resort

Wonga Beach residents who’ve been reminiscing about an old ‘pub’ in their suburb years ago may soon have reason for a big ‘cheers!’ with plans for a beachside resort to include a new bar – with public access.

A social media post started the thirst-generating conversation.

“Sorry have to ask but I've been here for a couple months now and just wondering why there isn't a pub here.”

The responses flowed like beers on tap.

“We had one years ago unfortunately it got bulldozed the place has never been the same,” one replier lamented.

“I Think this was Redbacks. I think it may have changed from OZ Oasis to Redbacks about 2000,” another said.

“I remember upstairs there was a restaurant you could get a feed and they also had a bottle shop. Happy days.”

The old ‘pub’ as some of the locals attest to it being known as (where you could also hire videos too, apparently), was actually the bar inside an old resort on Oasis Drive. But the premises is no longer there; instead, there’s just an empty piece of land.

Resort plans

Now, Newsport has it on excellent information from the new management of the fairly recently renamed Daintree Beach Resort (formerly Pinnacle Village Holiday Park), that the resort is going ahead with plans for its new bar – to be accessible to the public.

This of course means Wonga Beach residents will have somewhat of a pub to call their ‘local’ again.

It’s all part of current renovations at the resort, at the end of Vixies Road, that we should know more about in coming weeks and will share with our readers – including when the new bar opens and other such important information – knowing full well that they’ll be keen to share a cold bevvy or two at the new watering hole.

“With plans for a new beach bar, large natural swimming pool, onsite food truck and glamping tents, Daintree Beach Resort will be the destination, not just a place to stay,” the resort’s website also adds.
