Mossman Show hunts for stellar team of Young Rural Ambassadors
YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

A burning question lingers in our Shire; Who are the spirited young residents, aged between 15 and 19, radiating community spirit and eager to be involved in the Mossman Agriculture Show?
This is the question occupying the Mossman Show committee, along with Deborah Kachel, who plays a key role in coordinating the Young Rural Ambassador Quest.
Open to all young residents of the Douglas Shire, the quest aims to encourage the local youth to volunteer and become more active in the Mossman & District Show and the Agricultural Show movement.
Additionally, it serves as a pathway for potential participation in the Queensland Rural Ambassador Awards, a prestigious leadership program administered by Queensland Ag Shows.
For aspiring Young Rural Ambassadors, all that's needed is a genuine love for Rural Queensland and a fervent desire to shape the future of agriculture and the local community.
Ms Kachel noted, “We currently have six enthusiastic young individuals assisting with the organisation, which is fantastic. However, we welcome volunteers of all ages, as there are various roles to fill in the week leading up to the event.
“Whether it's pavilion setup, assisting with cattle, poultry, or equestrian events, or helping out in the secretary's office or at the gates, there’s something for everyone. Even a couple of hours at the gates makes a significant difference.”
Ms Kachel highlighted that participating in the show offers a firsthand understanding of its significance and highlights the importance of community engagement.
“The show symbolises our commitment to the survival and flourishing of agriculture in our area, especially given the recent challenges in our sugar cane industry," she said. “This year in particular, the show provides an opportunity for our community to unite and find solace amidst recent challenges."
She added, “For young people especially, involvement in activities like the Mossman Show provides invaluable experiences. It's a chance to engage with the community, develop skills, forge new connections, and enhance their resumes with meaningful contributions to their community.”
