Port Douglas is hosting the second round of the FNQ Rugby Union finals tomorrow.

No local teams or players will be involved in the games - with the Reds reserves team knocked out of the finals last week - but Raiders president Travis Gooch says the day promises to be a big one, with the club now experienced at hosting the event.

“This is the third year that our club has hosted this round of finals,” Gooch says.

The day kicks off with the Reserves Preliminary Final between JCU Mariners at 1.30pm, followed by the women’s game between Southside Crusaders and Barron Trinity Bulls at 3.30pm, then the senior men’s game at 5pm between Northern Beaches Mudcrabs and Barron Trinity Bulls.

Gooch says the Reds reserves team was “very happy” with its first season in the competition after being knocked out of the finals last week, with Penrhyn winning 22-14.

The team is based in Atherton, but Raiders players Damien Friedrichs, Adrian Bannerman and Clint Kachel played for them.

“Great result for the first season,” Gooch says.

The matches will be played at Raider Park, Port Douglas Sports Complex, Wharf Street, Port Douglas.
