A Port Douglas sporting and social event held last weekend raised about $36,000 for charity.

The Salsa Sorensen Charity Weekend included a wine lunch for 100 guests at Salsa Bar and Grill on Friday, which raised more than $12,000 for the Mossman Support Services charity.

And. on Sunday, 100 players hit the Palmer Sea Reef Golf Club course for the Brian Sorensen Cup event, which raised more than $23,000.

That money was handed out to seven organisations - the Mossman RSL, Douglas Heat Basketball Association, OzCare Port Douglas, Port Shorts Film Festival, Mossman State High School, Douglas Shire Meals on Wheels and Port Douglas C&K Bush Tucker Garden.

The Sorensen Cup men’s team winners were Paul McMahon, Brian Windward, Laurie Greenwood and Stewart Booth, while the winning ladies team was Nadine Jones, Julie Rose, Deb Wilson and Robyn Nimmo.

Charity spokeswoman Jenni Sorensen said the event was a big success.

“These events are about more than golf and good food - they’re about giving back,” she said.

“With over $35,000 raised this year, the impact across Mossman and Port Douglas will be felt in schools, sporting clubs, community services and cultural programs.”

The Salsa Sorensen Association thanked sponsors, players, and supporters who ensure the Charity Weekend continues to grow and deliver lasting impact for the Douglas community.
