Meet the new principal ready to take Mossman High to greater heights
STRONG VISION

Mossman State High School has welcomed a new leader at the helm, with Katherine Macfarlane stepping into the principal role this term.
With more than 20 years in public education she brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to helping students succeed.
She has worked in both regional and urban schools, building her expertise through teaching, curriculum leadership, and deputy principal roles.
“Strong relationships, high expectations, and inclusive practices are key to student success,” she said.
“I’ve always been passionate about helping students realise their potential, and becoming principal at Mossman SHS feels like a natural next step where I can have a broader impact.”
Katherine has spent the past 18 years in senior leadership across Far North Queensland, starting as an English and Humanities teacher at Thursday Island and Woree SHS before moving into regional project work.
She went on to serve as Deputy Principal at Cooktown SS, Head of School at Kuranda District College, and for the past decade, Deputy Principal at Trinity Bay SHS, also stepping into acting principal roles.
I’m honoured to lead Mossman SHS, contribute to its strong history, and help shape its next chapter,” Katherine said.
“My goal is to lead with integrity, empathy, and a clear vision, building strong partnerships with staff, families, primary schools, and the wider community to create a shared future for our students that’s rich in opportunity, learning and wellbeing.
“I’m here to listen and work collaboratively to ensure our school is a place where every student feels valued, supported and challenged, while providing a seamless, high-quality education and a strong sense of belonging for all.”
Katherine describes Mossman and its high school as “the jewel of the Far North”, praising its friendly, grounded students, stunning natural setting, and calm, connected atmosphere.
“Our students are friendly, grounded and proud, the setting is stunning, and there’s a calm, connected feel throughout the school,” she said.
“Our dedicated staff deliver strong results across diverse subjects, with excellent VET programs, industry links, and a growing partnership with the Kuku Yalanji community through plans for a Local Consultative Education Board.”
Looking ahead, Katherine sees both opportunity and challenge in guiding the school’s next stage of growth.
“Mossman SHS is already a high-performing school with the capacity and ambition to become a school of choice,” she said.
“The key is to keep lifting expectations and outcomes while maintaining the strong relationships, cultural ties, and community values that make Mossman so special.
“By working together, we can ensure the school continues to thrive and becomes a leader in regional education and a source of immense local pride.”
