Mossman Sharks triumphed 44-28 against a persistent Mareeba Gladiators on Sunday in FNQ Rugby League action.

The Sharks took some time to shake off the Gladiators, with the game still wide open at half time.

But the superior skills and strength of Mossman became clearer as the game went on, with the margin widening to an eventual 16-point gap.

Charles Baira scored three tries, while Japheth Mundraby, Robert Amber, Gabriel Stephen, Gordon James and Davin Crampton ran in one each.

The Sharks are at home to Ivanhoe in the first round of the finals on Saturday night from 7pm.

AFL Cairns

The large crowd was pumped for a mouth-watering clash of the two top teams of the AFL Cairns competition as the Port Douglas Crocs men faced off against the South Cairns Cutters last Saturday afternoon.

But, unfortunately, the contest soon turned into a fizzer as the Crocs raced to an early lead and never looked back, eventually winning 16-14 (110) to 3-7 (25).

The Cutters have a few to come back in if the sides meet in the finals in September, but they will want to improve if they are going to compete against a much stronger and more well-drilled Port Douglas outfit.

In-form full forward Kye Chapple did not even have his best game, narrowly missing several shots he would normally slot home to finish with three goals, along with Jacob Zboril and Callum Reid.

Best for the Crocs in the 85-point drubbing were Ben Mcphee, Brett Mckeown, Matthew Foy, Peter Megee, Murphy Short and Thomas Cantwell.

The women had a 32-point win against the Cutters in the late game, 6.9 (45) to 2.1 (13).

Luca Roulstone kicked four of the six goals to dominate up forward.

Port Douglas has the bye this weekend.

Far North Community soccer

Douglas Dragons had a comprehensive 4-1 away win against Stratford Dolphins on Friday.

Ignacio Ipinazar opened the scoring in the 12th minute, then Rafael Vihl scored in the 18th to put the Dragons 2-nil up.

Stratford pulled one back from a penalty in the 32nd minute to make the score 2-1 at half time.

But Ipinazar scored again in the 64th minute and Matias Martinez put the result beyond doubt in the 87th minute.
