Delays along the Captain Cook Highway are commonplace at the moment.

If you are driving between Mossman and Cairns tomorrow or next Tuesday, make sure you prepare to employ even more patience on the Captain Cook Highway than usual.

The State Government Transport and Main Roads Department (TMR) will be conducting two trials on those days driving big trucks along the under-repair road, along with an entourage of support vehicles, following the recent success of a similar trial early this month.

“To collect additional data TMR will be conducting two more trials,” a TMR update stated.

On Thursday, July  24, between 9am and 2pm, a 19m prime mover and semi-trailer, flanked by TMR vehicles, will be driven along the stretch.

And on Tuesday, July 29, from 9am to 2pm, a 23m B-double will be driven along the highway, along with more pilot vehicles.

“We ask road users to remain patient during this process and urge drivers not to overtake the trial vehicles to ensure safety,” it said.

“TMR does not anticipate additional delays because of these trials.”

The trials are being conducted to help shape TMR's forward planning for projects and review traffic-control measures and management of heavy vehicle movements, the department said.

This will help “minimise delays as much as possible” in the future.

“Thank you for your cooperation as we work to improve road safety and infrastructure.”
