A 17-year-old Mareeba boy has been arrested after a man trying to stop his own car from being stolen was assaulted.

At about 2pm yesterday (Wednesday, July 23) someone climbed into a Ford Ranger parked at a Fenwick Street business.

The 53-year-old car owner, also from Mareeba, saw the carjacker begin driving away.

He gave chase and, when the vehicle stalled, he told them to get out.

But the driver became aggressive, threatened the owner, and assaulted him, causing minor injuries.

Police soon arrived and a 17-year-old boy at the scene attempted to run but was quickly arrested.

A pair of knives, drugs and drug utensils were also seized.

The boy was charged with robbery with personal violence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, obstructing police, possessing a knife in public and possessing drugs.

His bail was denied and he was due to appear at the Mareeba Childrens Court today (Thursday, July 24).

If you have information about this, or any other, incident, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersqld.com.au.
