Bianca Velder says she is excited that her artwork Mellifera has become the public face of the latest Douglas Arts Studio Gallery (DAB) exhibition Sweet as Sugar.

The piece, which features on the posters for the Mossman gallery exhibition running from tomorrow (Saturday, June 7), is all about the drive for some to be pushed to work harder like queen bees - Mellifera is Latin for “honey-bearing”.

“It’s about the pressure that women are under, the mask cracks,” Velder says.

“You see the bee drones are just asking her for more and more.

“It’s really about how some people are in high stress, high demand.”

Relatively new to the DAB artistic family, Velder says the poster image is a catchy way to draw viewers into the show.

“To me it’s wonderful,” she says.

“It’s my first really big piece that I’ve worked on for a couple of months so, it’s just a really nice intro.”

She says, more broadly, the Sweet as Sugar exhibition is reflective of a crucial time in the history of Douglas Shire.

“(It is) indicative of who we are, what we are, what’s underlying here,” she says.

“Sugar is very important for the region, but it’s also about change.

“Mossman is transforming, the whole region is transforming, and I think what we’re seeing here in the work is that recognition of the transformation.”

Sweet as Sugar is on at DAB Gallery, 11 Mill Street, Mossman, from Saturday, June 7, to Saturday, July 5.
