Locals are being encouraged to plan their travel early, with major road closures returning to the Douglas Shire on Sunday, June 15, as part of the annual Cairns Ironman event.

The triathlon brings a lot of visitors and national attention to the region, but also comes with road impacts to ensure the safety of athletes, volunteers, and spectators.

From 5.30am to 5.30pm on Sunday, June 15, the following roads will be affected:

  • Captain Cook Highway from Veivers Rd, Palm Cove to Trezise Rd, Craiglie - full closure
  • Trezise Rd from Captain Cook Highway to Mowbray River Rd  - full closure
  • Captain Cook Highway from Trezise Rd to Beor St, Craiglie  - full closure
  • Spring Creek Rd - Local access only

For full details of all changed traffic conditions visit https://www.ironman.com/races/im-cairns/traffic-impact or phone 1300 761 384.

Access in and out of Port Douglas will be restricted during these hours, and locals are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel or use alternate routes where possible.

If you need to head to the airport on 15 June between 5.30am and 5.30pm you are advised to give yourself plenty of time by taking the Mulligan and Kennedy Highways, via Kuranda, onto Smithfield and eventually to Cairns airport.
