In celebration of Mother’s Day, Newsport is shining a light on inspiring local mums who go the extra mile - not just for their families, but for the wider community. One such wonderful mum (and ‘mema’) is Robyn Perry.

Robyn has called the Douglas Shire home for more than 40 years. She’s a devoted mother and proud grandmother, with seven grandchildren between her three children - something she considers one of life’s greatest blessings.

“It’s very special being a grandparent,” Robyn shared. “They call me ‘mema’ - we were supposed to be G-ma and G-Pa, but the grandkids couldn’t pronounce it, so ‘Mema’ stuck. And I love it.

Robyn speaks fondly of her close relationship with her grandchildren.

“I’ve been lucky to have the flexibility in my work to spend more time with them. Being a grandparent keeps you young. I see it as a privilege.”

Robyn currently works as a residential supervisor at the Mossman Gorge Centre, where she supports young adult Indigenous trainees.

“It’s a bit like being a house parent,” she explained. “We help with transport, appointments, social events, and general wellbeing. It’s a great job, and I love being part of it.”

Family values are central to Robyn’s life. “I’ve always tried to pass on the importance of being honest, respectful, and true to yourself. Community and family go hand in hand,” she said.

“It’s lovely seeing my daughters now getting involved with their children’s sports and activities, that spirit continues.”

When asked how her children might describe her in three words, Robyn smiled and said, “Love you, Mema.” She laughed, adding, “They say that all the time, depending on their age, of course!”
