A 68-year-old man has been taken into police custody following a shooting incident in Silver Valley on the Atherton Tablelands last night.

Police said a 44-year-old Silver Valley man went to a home on Shady Creek Road at about 9.30pm on Tuesday, May 13, where an altercation took place.

The 44-year-old sustained gunshot wounds to his abdomen and calf, then drove home, where he called police.

He was taken to Mareeba Hospital, then airlifted to Cairns Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

After what police described as “protracted negotiations”, the 68-year-old was taken into police custody at about 11.45am today.

Investigations are continuing.
