More details have been released about a raft of roadworks happening across Douglas Shire across the next few months, with the Palm Cove-Port Douglas section of Captain Cook Highway, the Mossman-Daintree Road, and the Mossman-Mount Molloy Road all affected.

Reconstruction works by the State Government Transport and Main Roads Department (TMR) on the Captain Cook Highway between Buchans Point, Ellis Beach, Yule Point and Mowbray will be expanded in coming weeks, which will involve more traffic-control measures and night road closures.

“TMR can confirm, no imminent night closures are scheduled for May or June,” the department states.

“Where scheduled night closures are required TMR will provide advance notice.”

There are more than 80 sites needing fixing along the Highway, including 32 major sites where hundreds of metres of repairs are required.

“There are extensive pavement, guardrails, signage, drains and culverts that require repairs as well as extensive revegetation works that will take place along the length of the highway.”

Recent and upcoming works include three sites from between 80m to 1.4km north of Turtle Creek south of Oak Beach, as well as ongoing lane closures north of Ellis Beach.

Meanwhile, heading up the Mossman-Daintree Road, construction work will soon begin on Stewarts Creek Road, Douglas Creek Road and Upper Daintree Road.

TMR will also start reconstruction works at Humbug Reach on the Mossman-Daintree Road, 32km north of Mossman.

Onsite works will start on Monday, June 2, where drivers can expect delays of up to 15 minutes during works for movements of heavy machinery and crews through the construction site.

Road closures are expected, with dates to be confirmed pending progress of the works.

Roadworks will include more than 30 concrete piles being drilled down up to 14m, soil nails and a combined 30m retaining wall and 50-metre rock wall.

Night closures may be required.

And, on the Mossman-Mount Molloy Road, priority works are expected to start on Friday (May 30) at the site currently under single-lane-traffic control on the way up to the lookouts.

There are no road closures or night closures yet scheduled there, but TMR will provide advance notice if they are needed.

Works on Mossman-Mount Molloy Road will include soil nailing and concreting to stabilise slopes, installation of retaining walls and revegetation works.

“The section under single lane traffic control will be the first priority with other sites to be completed later in the reconstruction program,” TMR states.
